Here is where we answer some questions we have been asked, some questions we think we will be asked, and just generally elaborate on the rules. If you have any questions we missed, feel free to ask below. You never know, you might not be the only one wanting to know!

So here is the FAQ in no specific order, because... Well I don't have a good excuse for not making this neat and organized. So moving on...

You said no magic/powers works on the Isle. What about....?

Great Question! So this is one of those things that is always hard to separate in DW. And the Isle makes it even harder since there are things that seem to be biological (Like transformations) that appear to be blocked. Uma is stuck human where her mom is stuck in sea witch form, after all. So in general if it isn't clear or obvious, just ask the mod team and we'll work with you to figure it out. But in general, if it doesn't immediately follow that doing A physically B happens, B probably counts as a power. Using Dragon Quest as an example - thank you, Sylvando - There are abilities that use magic points. Some of them, like using dance and music to heal someone... those would be magic. But ones that are settling into a stance to be ready to parry or really awesome pick pocketing? Those would not count as magic and would still work on the Isle.

And as a reminder, the power nerf only applies to the Isle, other than possibly the random rare event (And events always have their own rules anyhow) so if you know your character is going to Auradon, you don't have to worry about this one.

You mentioned in rules ideas for how to make CRAU work from multiple sources? Or how to handle CRAU with updates?

While you are free to use other methods, if you are stuck or scrambling, here is one I recommend as fun to play with. Build in a trigger. Pick either pure canon from the update point, or one line of CRAUness, and play that until someone they knew in the now forgotten timelines crosses their path. Then seeing them, hearing them, touching their hand... you can use any of those as a trigger and have all the memories come rushing back. When I did this with Aqua it was when she touched someone's Keyblade. With Mal it will be when she sees someone, looking in their eyes, that she knew.

My character is CRAU from a game where they know character X. The person playing character X would rather not deal with that. What do I do!?
Talk to the other player OOC, and see what can be worked out, even if that answer is that your character learns from someone else about the multiverse and learns that the character they knew and the character here are not actually the same person. If you ever need someone to teach that lesson IC, please hit up the NPC request page and someone will be along for a thread shortly, or a hand waved thread can be plotted.

Multiverse, you say? Well what about multiples of a single character?
Excellent question! And it dovetails nicely with something else I wanted to discuss here... similar canons.
So let's answer them together!
Alright, so some fandoms have multiple forms of media that feed the same canons. For example the Descendants/Isle of the Lost series has multiple novel series, a movie series, and a number of animated shorts like Wicked world. In this case all of those sources would count as a single series. (As to which takes precedence, see setting info) For another example, all of the MCU is taken as a single canon, no matter if the source is from one of the movies or one of the D+ series, or one of the old Netflix or Hulu series such as Runaways or Iron Fist.
However, Disney has a Snow White with an Evil Queen in multiple places. Descendants SW and EQ are considered different from Snow White SW and EQ, who are also different from the OUAT SW and EQ, so the same character could be apped once for each of those canons!
As for from the same canon... that will be taken on a case by case basis, but at minimum requires two things: the versions of the character are from DRASTICALLY different canon points that make a huge change to the character. (In this case the one playing from the earlier canon point may not be allowed to canon update, so this will have to be discussed with all parties in advance) and one of the two has to have sufficient CRAU to further differentiate them. Again, this will be taken on a case by case basis, and be warned the answer will probably be no. But I am open minded and willing to be convinced if everyone involved wants this to happen.

What about a character who changes almost enough in their series to almost be a separate character.

Again, that will be case by case... but for some of the ones I suspect will come up most often I can answer here and now:
The 1st Doctor is counted as separate from any Doctor after, but cannot canon update into a later Doctor. the 10th Doctor and the Meta crisis Doctor are different characters. Missy/The Master and other Doctor who Characters who regenerate the same way are likewise all considered separate characters.
When it comes to Kingdom Hearts, things get stickier. Roxas, Ven, Sora are all SEPARATE characters. Lea and Axel, however, are the same person for purposes of this series. As a general rule, if they can be on screen at the same time without more time travel than the series usually involves itself in, or paradox, or really weird magic.... they are probably different. But if you are unsure, ask. (If you are asking about Xemnas and Xehanort just to make me cry in the corner, I already have done so you don't need to do that again. The answer to that one is I don't have an answer at the moment, but if you are serious about apping one of them, I'll figure it out.)

Okay, so the rule says no mythological/historical/real figures, but what if my character knows someone who is on that list...?
Okay, look, Steve Rodgers and Tony Stark don't have to forget any of the other Avengers, or foes they have fought, or allies they have met. They still know these people, they can still mention them. But multiverse rules apply. Others might know other versions.
Likewise if your character is directly related to someone on the no list (and at least one of the NPCs is) the character themselves is still game legal.
In both cases please, do not name drop just to name drop. Please do be reasonable and respectful. Especially if the person in question is a real world person or variant there of. Yes, Lauren Cooper has met the Queen... but let's be respectful to the memory and the people who have strong emotions about her, alright?
This is part of that whole OOC and IC are different thing.
Thank you.

Is there a network?
Yes and no. There is one, and the king will make sure that everyone who asks him for a smart phone gets one but.... there is almost no signal on the Isle. So the network is only for those on the Auradon side of the game. However anything downloaded to your phone will still be there when you get to the Isle if you move between.
Also there are lots of for flavor things, like the phones having zapps instead of apps. A list of Auradon terms for things like Instagram (InstaRoyal) will eventually be in the setting info post.

My character has ways to communicate over long distances! So they can use that on the Isle, right?
Sorry to say, but not right. Something about the barrier on the Isle blocks all sorts of signals. Even those. So telepathy, gummiphones, Stark's high tech communication devices.... nada. At least... Nada on the Isle.
Wouldn't be as much fun to be in a survival setting if you could just phone a friend, after all.

Wait, I didn't see anything in the rules about Playercest/self RP. Does that mean we can?!
Conditionally, yes. Look, there are some times, especially in a small game, where it makes no sense that your characters would never have met, especially if they have close CR in common. So there are a few ways that you can handle this, in this game.
1 - You may write out a locked post in the logs community that is your characters interacting. Please write this as a single post, or if it is too long, in as few posts as possible per interaction, to keep things neat and to make it easy for others to read it they want to. I know we all love icons, but please do not break this up into a separate post for each character. Please write this in prose format. Brackets or no brackets is fine, but please do use quotation marks in either case, and make sure it is clear which character is speaking when.
Even if the conversation is nominally on the network, please post it in logs and use prose form. Thank you.
2 - If all people in a thread are okay with you having more than one character present, then you can have multiple characters in the same thread. If it is between you and less than three other players, please keep all your characters' replies into a single reply box, making it obvious which character said what.
If you are in a large thread, like a massive event thread, that has three or more players beside yourself, you may post with multiple characters, either all in the same post or in separate posts if they are responding to other people.
If your characters are replying to each other in an open thread PLEASE BE RESPECTFUL and keep that all to a single post each time, and keep it on the short side, giving other players a chance to jump in and play without having to read a novel length post that is your characters interacting.

A few other notes on self RP:
Please consider the viability of any character you have who posts more activity that is self RP than it is interactions with other characters. The fun of this format is interaction and writing together. So please leave big character development moments for threads with other players' characters, and let your character spread their wings. Or if they are shy (I play Xion from KH Days, I get having characters who do NOT want to socialize outside their small group) push them out of the nest.
Also, if Self-RP is being used to gang up and/or bully any character, group of characters', or any specific player's characters you will be asked to refrain from further self RP and this permission may go away game wide. Again, let's be excellent to each other. And even IC, pulling a meta move to let your bully be a bully is an uncool move.

Wait, you said we can only App one character at a time, but you have self-RP rules, what about linked characters, or characters who do best sharing a journal?
Those can be an exception to a one a month rule for sure, just use the Mod Contact page to make your case! Some examples that will probably get a yes: the twins from Ouran, a character with a soul bound familiar that can talk, anyone from Shugo Chara with their own Chara(s), Any Cepter from Culdcept with their Cards, a married couple that are nearly always together in their canon.
Another good example would be Ladybug, Chat Noir, or Papillon with their Kwamis. However in cases where more than one character could lay claim to the same secondary character - like Fu, Marinette, and Nino all having claim to Wayzz, the mod will make a call on a case by case basis.
In these cases, if they are playing in threads with anyone else, they should always share all their replies in a single post, and again not so long that other players are made to feel unwelcome or like they cannot engage. Thank you.
Hey, what items come with us?!
Glad you asked. Game breaking items do not come with you, sorry they just don't. If you are at all unsure, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Weapons that come in with the characters may be nerfed. In some cases that may be closer to literal than others. For example a gun may become a nerf gun. If your character is going to bring in a weapon, discuss it with the mod before apping, please. Otherwise you may find a change you were not okay with on your acceptance post. (This is a may, not a will be, and will be judged on a case by case basis. Generally something with a sharp edge, something explosive and/or something projectile is far more likely to be nerfed. Magical weapons are less likely to be nerfed, and items core to a character are less likely to be nerfed. Though Vash's arm canon might wind up shooting pancakes....)

But... anything can be a weapon.

This is true. Your point? >.>
  • Drugs. While medicines do come in, drugs do not. Please feel free to make use of the Mod Contact page if you want to ask about specifics.
  • Magical items/super high tech items - case by case basis. Speak with the Mod if you have questions before apping.
  • Clothing/Jewelry - was your character wearing it? Yes? Cool. Does it break any of the above rules? No. Cool. You're good to go!
  • Stuff in the pockets - if it isn't mentioned above, you're probably fine. Ask if you are unsure.

Hammerspace?
That varies. In Auradon, yes so long as the items in the hammer space are not circumventing any of the above. Living creatures in hammer space will be case by case basis and must be discussed with the mod in advance. Please be aware that if your character is on the Isle and their hammerspace is magic, they will NOT have access to it.
Let me state that again. Magical hammer space is not accessible on the Isle. As an example, a Kingdom Hearts character does not have infinite pockets on the Isle. They cannot access their magical weapons on the Isle unless they arrived with it in their hand. And since they can't send it back to hammerspace, and it loses all magic on the Isle, if they put it down or it is taken from them, they have to actually go and get it back!
Conversely, the Doctor's pockets are Gallifreyan tech. Within reason (please be reasonable) his hammerspace will still work. With one exception. And that exception applies to all hammerspace...
In this game Hammerspace does not contain food well. At all. Even in Auradon. If it has been in hammerspace more than one day in game, it has started to go over. By a week it is inedible, even by Isle standards. And they eat literal trash sometimes.

Wait, you said Kingdom Hearts weapons. And there is that big shield around the Isle... can the Keyblade unlock.....
The fun answer is: It can try, and it will be fun to watch, but there is something weird about the spell. It has plot armor and cannot be broken at this point.

The real answer is... the mods have possible future plans. So yes, we want to let you guys do your big cool things, but we also want to keep the game intact and fun for everyone. When and if the barrier comes down for good (Or for evil), no single player character will be the one to make it happen.

The rules said no summoning power, but what about....?

To clarify, that rule was to restrict characters from being able to summon other player characters or characters from outside the game, or teleport people around. But other kinds of summons may still work. Some summons that are 100% okay:
Anything where the summoned creature is a non-character normally carried in a non interactive form. For example a Pokemon trainer may have their pokemon with them if they had them in their pokeballs when they arrived. (Yes, Ash can have Pikachu even if Pikachu isn't in a Pokeball. Jessie and James might have to fight over Meowth, however) A Cepter may have their Culdcept Cards. A Card Capter Sakura Character can have the Clow Cards if they had them on them at their canon point and no one else in game already has them.

Wait... wait. My character can have their POKEMON/CARDS?!

Yes and no. Pokemon Trainers will be limited to five Pokemon, and only ones they had on them when they arrived. If your character had more than five you may make your case to the Mods at Mod contact. Please no legendaries or super powerful Pokemon without talking to the mods first. Pokemon powers are limited the same way character powers are.

For Clow Cards/ Culdcept Cards and similar, they again have to belong to your character as of the canon pull point, and the character must have had them on them as of the canon pull point. Please be reasonable with which Cards you bring and remember that they have to follow the rules as well. If someone wants to bring in Zeneth the Dragon-Eyed, the mod team knows about his arm, please contact us.

Can we get a clarification on how teleportation and phasing through objects would work in this setting?

Sure! Okay so to start, this is for areas/times where power and tech work. This is not an exception or workaround for the Isle. That said, teleportation first.

Teleportation/portals: They work only with a place you can clearly see, 20 foot radius at most, so long as it does not cross any physical or magical barrier. And you have to have somewhere solid to land unless you have another power that lets you land on air or non surface space.

This means you could use it to speed travel in hops (think the blink spell from World of Warcraft), but couldn't get into a locked room, or cross the ocean with it.

The same goes for phasing abilities. You can phase through people if the other player is okay with it, you can phase through bushes, random objects like chairs and tables, but not complete physical or magical barriers. So again cannot get into a locked room this way.

The rule basically is here because part of this game is about exploration and creative ways to get through challenges. And also because the map is going to slowly expand and your mod team will not be able to keep up with someone speed running the maps. Basically this isn't here to ruin your fun but facilitate it. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Wait, back up. Isle has no magic, Auradon does. How do I know where I am going?

This is explained more in the apps page as well as setting info. But the quick version is that people who are unquestionably good will start in Auradon. Villains will start on The Isle, no matter how justified they think they are. As for Anti-heroes and those with a canonical redemption arc, those will be set on a case by case basis, and you will have a say in where your characters go if they are not clearly one or the other.

Does this game have a Discord or Plurk?

The answer is... YES*

Yes we have a Plurk now. You will be given the chance to add it as a friend once you are welcomed to the game! Please note that the mods do not check it regularly.

There is a Discord. Sort of. It is for announcements only and does not allow chat. Neither of your mods have the spoons to moderate a chat, sorry guys. You can ask Chicklet or Tanks for the invite if you want to see all the game announcements. The Discord is open to current and potential players. But again, friends only. This may change in the future, but so far, we're still a bitty baby game. Thank you guys for understanding.

Death Mechanic?

Coming soon!

My character's clothes are part of their magic... so what happens if they wind up on the Isle?

Characters whose clothing has magical properties or is normally generated by magic will still arrive with the clothes on their back, at least. However, while on the Isle, any magical properties the clothes have will be negated; they'll just be normal clothes, no more special or durable than any other clothing of similar make and materials.
The other option is that they can find Isle style clothes in an abandoned locker, or once the Isle expands, on a clothes line or in someone's shelter. The Mods are happy to help with reference images. (And if enough people need them, we'll make a whole page just for that.)

So I know swearing is substituted with something that fits the character. The first question I have is, does intent effect results?

For instance: Due to religion my Romulan (and Romulan adjacent) characters use Elements both in an almost reverent fashion... and as a swear word (kinda comparable to thanking a deity vs swearing by using their name) So in that case would Elements be changed when used as a swear but not otherwise?

Additionally Romulans have a slur version of basically every species name.(For instance Human can be either Terrhain (regular) or Hevam (slur)). So the question there is would Alien culture/language specific words be changed?(which probably falls under does intent effect results) And in that case specifically would it be changed to a fitting random word or would it just change to the non-slur form?

Conan, who is very bored on the island and very concerned about the kids, is a walking encyclopedia of knowledge and skills. In the near future hes going to want to start to make living improvements to the island. So I want to get an idea of what he has to work with.

Are there any tools or materials lying around in supply closets at the school? Where are the power and water shut offs? If he took off the plugs on the electric outlets is it just a normal outlet box under that?

If he tried to find the source of water or electricity on the island, what would he find? Are there plants?

Thanks!

Conan knows school layouts, so he would start by searching the most likely areas for utility shut offs (because he is suspicious whether this school is up to wiring code, and wants to find the breaker panels before opening up one of those outlets).

Related. What kinds of soil are on the island. Specifically would be be able to find sand and pebbles? Or possibly fire pits from old bonfires?

Thinking about apping the eternal ten year old, Mr Ketchum here but I wanted to make sure he could still at least Pikachu and if he's allowed to have his usual six pokemon like a trainer usually has, if I could pull Pokémon from his earlier adventures rather than his later adventures even if he's from later in the time line. Specifically, Squirtle, Charizard, Torkoal, Noctowl, and Greninja

Pondering characters

Hi!

I am thinking of 3 potential characters. 2 have magic and one is human. Hermione Granger: Would she have access to her magic or be a muggle or squib? Jester Lavorre is from Critical RolE. Her wiki is here, but she also uses magic as a Trickster Cleric. Will magic be able to be regained? And Rory Williams is a human.

Thanks!!!!

I was planning on applying Rory and Hermione, but I do have some App questions. Is there a sample app anywhere? I am also curious about the difference between Auradon and the isle. Did I miss seeing that page?

Because I suspect it'll have an opportunity to come up:

~LANGUAGE~ stuff! ...specifically, translation shenanigans!

I'm thinking that for the most part, it's pretty handwavey, right? Everyone just kinda magically has stuff translated for them, because multiversal stuff would be super inconvenient otherwise, unless it's a case of deliberately teaching someone else bits of that language, or of a word that simply doesn't translate over correctly, so ends up as a loanword of sorts... but what if....

1, a character, while in their homeworld, writes something down, doing so in their native language, which is definitely pretty unique to that setting/group they're from... and then that writing ends up in this game? would it still look to others the way it did back home, re: the shapes of the letters and everything? ...would those others be at a loss for trying to decipher it? ....or would those others be able to read it out loud, sound it out in the language in which it's written, as if they know its alphabet/writing system? or would they simply see it as if it were in their own language, instead of one that they definitely wouldn't know?

2, same situation, but it's something written down while in the game here, deliberately using that language that others wouldn't logically know (yet?), either in an effort to keep others from reading it, or in an effort to make a point of using that language in particular, as in the case of teaching it to someone there?

Should we just assume it's "whatever's fun/convenient in the moment for what we want to do"? or is there an official stance already for this?

Hey, so my question is (I'd figure?) mostly relevant to video game characters. But things that are essentially 'game mechanics' and are somewhat handwavy when it comes to physics and physical ability.

For example traversal abilities that are clearly magic (like gliding in KH) are obviously a no go on the Isle and follow the limitations appropriate for Auradon. But I was wondering about something like high jump (or double jump etc.) that aren't necessarily meant to be magic, but are also far beyond the normal ability of a human, and possibly beyond the ability the character might otherwise have in a different media setting.

For example, my character Roxas does not necessarily have super strength, or any kind of inherent physical ability that would allow him to jump thrice his own height, but it's also not implied to be magic in the game. (Mostly it's one of those things that I'm sure is for the enjoyment of actually playing the game, but basically the long and short of my question is how that translates into the slightly more grounded setting of Auradon, and especially the Isle.)

Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

What's the availability of metal, particularly hard metals (and especially metals including iron), on the Isle, and in Auradon? And what type of quality metals are we looking at?

(I presume Auradon is more likely to have really *good* steel than the Isle...)

Also, does booze count as 'drugs' for purposes of arrival items?

Hey! So my question is about the clarity of the wishing. Of course for a wish to count it must contain the words 'I wish', but must the wish be spoken aloud? Or will the magic grant an unspoken wish that's only thought, as long as it's thought with intention? That's all, thank you!

MOAR ADMITTEDLY-OVER-DETAILED LANGUAGE-NERDERY AHOY!

(because I'm a nerd, what can I say, lol)

so I'm sure that if the word a character would use doesn't really have a translation, it'd be untranslated -- like how there isn't any direct English translation for alker (there're a few "ehhh, it's close-ish" words, like "cryptid" or "nonhuman" but those definitely miss the mark) it just wouldn't translate. it'd be like with other loanwords... like zen, ubuntu, nirvana, etc.

but if there are close-enough translations, that it'd be a lot more natural to just translate it, even if the actual meaning intended isn't quite the same, in both languages...? like say if Language A has a word specifically for platonic/familial kinds of love, but another for romantic love, and a character who'd speak Language A would easily end a phone call with "love you too" to both their mom and SO, but they'd be using different words in doing so... it'd still translate to "love you", right? we wouldn't have to invent the words they're actually using on the spot, or have it be weirdly clunky and precise with writing them saying like, "family-love you too, mom"/"romantic-love you too, sweetheart"? XD

or if the language doesn't make certain distinctions -- like how Japanese didn't have separate words for green and blue, we could kinda translate that however, for the sake of clarity? but realistically, the character'd be hearing the same word, in their language?

((admittedly, part of this is me wondering if I should rethink some of how I'm writing someone's speech. yes, Chell. I've been writing what he says to be like... how it'd come across to someone else that knows his language, sorta? like, localize it, don't just go for literal translations! otherwise, I'd have to go even more full-on language nerd than I want, and figure out stuff like precise grammar rules, articles, etc... keeping more to how he'd actually have said things, I'd have to come up with a whole 'nother pronoun system or start putting numbers in it, too, or make it all clunky, and I don't want to do that, lol...))

though, that does raise another question -- what with there not being gendered pronouns in Chell's language, if someone were to come tell him about two people that showed up, and one of them, he did this thing, and the other, she did that... I'd imagine it'd translate over to what he's used to, to keep the first one referenced clear from the second... but that he'd prolly have no idea by the end of it that there were both a male and female involved? or would that just register to him as akin to them having described them somewhat, like if they'd said "well, the guy told the lady that..." sorta?

also, how would that translate to writing? because now I'm just picturing Chell messing with those fridge-magnet word things, having them say something that makes perfect sense to him, and someone else trying to read it, and questioning if he's even literate, or just moving things around to move them around... 😂 like not keeping pronouns straight, because to him, they all look like "(third-person pronoun)" even though to someone who knows a language that does have gendered pronouns, there were like five of each on the board to pick from or something? (I'd imagine that if he'd actually written it himself, it'd be a different matter, but if he's rearranging something someone else wrote, like flashcards or something? and now I'm just picturing him being a complete question mark in a game of CaH/Apples-to-Apples/similar, because of stuff like this....)

omg.... COULD they even play Scrabble or similar, given the different languages involved? 🤣 everyone just playing in their own language? someone lays down a word in English, Mallia lays one down in archaic French one turn, and another in Elvish the next, someone else puts one down in Spanish, and because it's all letter-by-letter, they actually see the others' words as written/spelled? I'm sure that crossword puzzles would be interesting here indeed....

editing to add: if someone were to spell something out loud, letter by letter, but they call the letters something a little different, how would that come across? (ie, "Aay", "aleph", "alpha", etc, all for the letter A/a or its equivalent?) should I get to making up names for letters, or just handwave that to whatever the other chars would understand to associate with that letter, as it's referred to in their own language?
